A New Chapter Begins: The Delhi Public Library Is Set For a Makeover on Its 60th Birthday

Peeling  paint, cracks in the walls, bamboo beams supporting a makeshift front door and a messy exterior overwhelmed by concrete litter -- this is not what one expects from an institution that has gone to town with its grand 60th anniversary celebrations.

That, however, is the physical reality, at least from the outside, of the Delhi Public Library.

Situated opposite the Old Delhi railway station, the library's 60th anniversary celebrations will begin on February 1 with a slew of unique exhibitions organised by its parent ministry of culture.

But things may not remain desolate for too long, if Banwari Lal, the director of the library, is to be believed. The heritage building housing the library, which was used as a transit camp for the army prior to Independence, is set to get a makeover.

A priority area of the beautification drive will be a 400 sq- feet open- air reading corner on the lawns, complete with shades and benches for the members to recline and read.

" Our idea is to bring back the reading culture of the early 1970s when we had an open- air reading corner attached to the library for the members," says Lal. The concept is being revived following persistent requests from the current members. The open- air reading corner, however, will be ready only by March 2011. According to the library staff, the lawn will be spacious enough to accommodate at least 50 people.

The Central Public Works Department has also allocated Rs 13 lakh to the library for the repair of its boundary walls.

You may be forgiven for thinking that the makeover is going to be confined to the building and its surroundings. But in order to help members spot the library staff more easily, the latter have been given eye- catching orangecoloured vests. " This will help the members to call out for any assistance, if necessary," says Lal.

With a membership of 59,000, the library offers free service to its members, including internet access. Ironically, the arrival of the new medium has played a major role in increasing the strength of the members.

The colourfully- decorated children's section of the library has also played a role in roping in young members from the neighbourhood, many of who come here to spend their spare time.

It is even furnished with games and toys.

Started in 1951 with financial and technical assistance from Unesco, the library was inaugurated by former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

Since then, it has grown into one of the leading library systems in the country with branches at Patel Nagar, Karol Bagh and Shahdara.

There is a zonal library at Sarojini Nagar too. The management also runs a special Braille library for the visually challenged, a prison library for the inmates of Tihar Jail and a mobile library to reach out to the areas that do not have a library.

In connection with the anniversary celebrations, the library will provide visitors with a rare glimpse of some of its archived newspapers from the early 1950' s.

Titled Newseum, the exhibition, starting on February 1, will showcase some lesser known but memorable photographs that juxtapose the past and the present while delineating the city's ever- changing facade, cartoons and articles.
