Construction of a foot overbridge at Chirag Delhi on the BRT corridor has hit a roadblock with the Delhi Development Authority denying land to the transport department. Transport Commissioner RK Verma said that though the DDA had earlier given consent to providing the said land, it later declined the same stating that the land belonged to Jahanpanah Forest, one of the biggest green belts in the National Capital.

"The proposed foot overbridge with escalators and elevators on both ends has been scrapped due to unavailability of land," said Verma. He said the planned project was one of the three foot overbridges that were to be constructed on the BRT corridor stretching from Ambedkar Nagar to Moolchand.

"It is not viable to change the position of the proposed FOB, as the actual purpose of FOB would not be served," Verma said.

The construction of FOBs was planned keeping in view frequent movement of the pedestrians at these busy intersections. However, with the Chirag Delhi FOB being scrapped, the problems of the pedestrians in the area would continue to prevail. The official said that the place where the proposed FOB was to be constructed fell under Jahanpanah Forest, which is surrounded by crowded and high-traffic areas like Chirag Delhi, Alaknanda, Lado Sarai, Greater Kailash, Saket and Tughlakabad Extension.

The Transport Commissioner has said constructions for the remaining two over bridges at Ambedkar Nagar and Pushp Vihar will be completed soon. "Construction of the foot over bridge at Ambedkar Nagar is almost complete and would likely be opened by the first week of February for the pedestrians," said Verma. The over bridge at Pushp Vihar would also be completed in a month or two, he added. The transport department of Delhi government had proposed construction of a total of seven foot over bridges between Ambedkar Nagar and Delhi Gate of which three fell on the 5.8 km long stretch between Ambedkar Nagar and Moolchand. The transport department had also received a fund of Rs 70 crore from Delhi Government for construction of the FOBs to facilitate the pedestrians at these busy intersections.
