Mukarba Chowk, one of Delhi's biggest traffic intersections, became signal-free on Sunday .

With Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit commissioning the grade separator to motorists, movement of lakhs of inter-state, and local vehicles that pass through the intersection will ease.According to a recent RITES survey more than 2.3 lakh vehi , cles pass through the intersection every day .

This flyover will largely benefit people going to Chandigarh, Shimla, Panipat, Sonepat and other towns in Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. Mukarba Chowk is known for long traffic jams. The Rs 195-crore project took around two years and four months to complete.PWD officers, however, said that unless traffic movement was improved at the Sanjay Nagar-Transport Nagar Tjunction, the Mukarba flyover wouldn't benefit inter-state vehicles much.

"We are planning to close the Sanjay Nagar T-junction. Vehicles coming from Haryana will have to go to Mukarba flyover and take the loop back to NH1 to go to Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar. Similarly, vehicles exiting Transport Nagar will have to take a left and go up to Libaspur where they will get a U-turn. Some work on the road is yet to be done at Libaspur crossing before this scheme is implemented," traffic police chief S.N.Shrivastava said.
