A Two km Long Seelampur T-point To Shastri Park Metro Depot Death Trap For CcommutersBy Sumit Kumar, Section Civic Problems in Delhi
A TWO km stretch, from Seelampur T-point to Shastri Park Metro Depot, has become a death trap for commuters. As many as 32 people have lost their lives in the Shahdara Circle itself this year In an effort to stop these accidents, the traffic police have sent a proposal to the Public Works Department to review the Shastri Park intersection. Further, the police have demanded slip roads on either side, which will help decongest the intersection too.
According to R. K. Singh, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic), North East District, this stretch has become more dangerous for pedestrians since most of the accident victims have been pedestrians. Last year the toll was 33 for the entire year Sadly this year it is 32 from just January to July The police claim that in the absence of proper streetlights most of the accidents occurred in the wee hours. It is an important road for East bound residents. The road leads from the Seelampur Tpoint to ISBT Kashmere Gate. Lakhs of people use this road daily But there is no road crossing facility for pedestrians and the residents of nearby colonies who are forced to cross the road amid heavy vehicular movement. As per police officials, this is the main reason for the accidents. During a survey the traffic police found that due to its faulty design the Shastri Park intersection was dangerous for drivers.
Both the roads, the intersection to Khajuri Pushta and to Shastri Park DDA flats, are situated below the main Shastri Park ISBT road.
Due to a slope at the traffic signals on both sides the drivers are forced to stop their vehicles on half of the main road at this busy intersection, which increases the risk of accident. Besides this, the stretch has no night flash light provision, which also causes inconvenience to drivers at night. "We have sent a comprehensive proposal to the PWD and demanded for realignment of the road. Construction of slip roads has also been proposed," said R. K. Singh. chanchal.mukherjee@hindustantimes.com FACT FILE . This stretch has become dangerous for pedestrians since most of the accident victims have boon pedestrians. .
