Govt mulls signal-free drive on Outer Ring Road, to study elevated drive on 7-km stretchBy Sumit Kumar, Section Roads in Delhi
After Raining flyovers all over the city the Delhi government has now shifted its focus to Outer Ring Road. The state public works department (PWD) is exploring options to make the stretch signal-free and give motorists a smooth ride.
According to PWD sources, the government is mulling an elevated signal-free drive on a sevenkilometre-long stretch of the Outer Ring Road between Mangolpuri and Mukerba Chowk. ![]() While the south Delhi part of the road-from Mata Anandmayi Marg to IIT Gate-has flyovers on important traffic intersections, the long stretch from Janakpuri to Wazirabad still has a number of major choke points. "We are carrying out a feasibility study on four sections of the Outer Ring Road in the western part of the city The study will look into various possibilities to provide more right of way to vehicles, including construction of flyovers, underpasses and closure of various cuts," said PWD engineer-inchief N.M.D. Jain. The four sections are Wazirabad-Mukerba Chowk, Mukerba Chowk-Madhuban, MadhubanMangolpuri and Meera Bagh-Vikaspuri. According to senior PWD officials, the Outer Ring Road carries more vehicles than its capacity The vehicle-capacity ratio, said an official, varies from 1.1 (near Badli) to 1.81 (near Peeragarhi) on this road. "Once the feasibility studies are complete, we will send them to the DDA's technical committee. The technical committee will scrutinise it threadbare, raise objections and ask for suggestions from various stakeholders," said Jain. HT
