Tourism Ministry Decided To Promote Monsoon Packages To Make India More Attractive For TouristsBy ugesh sarkar, Section Tourism
Tourists to India will soon be able to romance the rain, as countless Bollywood heroes and heroines have done.
After all, monsoon is a season eagerly waited by most in the country despite the misery it brings with it in the form of floods, waterlogged streets, bad roads, submerged railway tracks and pot holes. The tourism ministry has now decided to promote monsoon tourism packages in the country that will consist of honeymoon packages, Ayurveda rejuvenation holidays, houseboat cruises and rain walks. Several states including Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Karnataka, Goa, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Assam and Sikkim have already been identified for promoting monsoon tourism packages. Speaking at a national seminar on monsoon tourism, organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) today, joint secretary, tourism, Ms Leena Nandan, said the ministry is working with states governments to develop promotional packages for monsoon season. "These packages will be announced soon," she said. "Foreign tourist arrivals have increased by 14.3 per cent in 2007, as compared to 2006 and the time has come to attract tourists in the lean monsoon season also," Ms Nandan added. She said West Asia is good market for promoting monsoon tourism along with Europe and the United States.Former secretary, tourism, Mr MP Bezbaruah, said since tourists are looking for new experiences, monsoon tourism can easily be marketed as a product.
The managing director, Madhya Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation, Mr Ashwani Lohani, said the success of monsoon tourism would help the industry in sustaining the lean months as there are very few tourists during the rainy season. "Goa was the first state to promote tourism during the monsoon season. Today, Goa hotels have 100 per cent occupancy during this period," he said. This, along with successful monsoon promotion by Kerala by giving Ayurveda packages, shows that it is possible to do away with this traditional lean season and attract tourists from all over the world to experience the magic of monsoon in India. Kerala, Uttarakhand and Assam shared the Monsoon Tourism initiatives taken by them at the seminar. Source: Statesman News Service 31/Aug/2008
