Unready flyover to be reopened, Cracks had appeared on two months ago; repair work still onBy parul118, Section Roads in Delhi
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has decided to reopen the flyover near Janakpuri District Centre for traffic even though the repair work on the breach that appeared two months back is still on.
Although the executive wing of the MCD says the flyover is unfit for public use, MCD's standing committee chairman Vijendra Gupta has directed the municipal Commissioner to open up the Janakpuri flyover. His reason: many flyovers are being used despite being under repair. ![]() The repair work on the breach of the Janakpuri flyover is not over yet, but the MCD's standing committe chairman gave it a go ahead "The expansion joints of the flyover are being repaired. It can't be ready by Thursday. It is a technical matter and will take some more time," said Ravidas, engineer-inchief of MCD, in the standing com mittee meeting. Hindustan Times had reported on July 2 that the repair work would require more than a month, even as MCD kept insisting at that time that it would be over in a few days. "The repair work is complete. Servicing is being done and the flyover is ready to be used. There are many flyovers that are kept open while servicing is being carried out," said Gupta. There are 27 flyovers under the jurisdiction of the MCD. The Janakpuri flyover was built six years ago. Ever since June 24, traffic police stopped cars from using the flyover, as the breach was almost 2 feet by 2 feet. The MCD summoned the Uttar Pradesh State Bridge Corporation (UPSBC), which is liable to repair and maintain the flyover for 10 years. Source: Hindustan Times Aug-20, 2008
