Public schools hail decision to promote students till Class VIIBy Dr arvind, Section Education
It's a welcome move. IIIII Detaining a student does not help him or her perform better. Rather, ut has a negative effect. Even in Class X, if students perform badly, we counsel them to switch streams so that they can manage according to their capability. ? AMITA WATTAL, Principal, Springdales, Pusa Road
Public Schools in Delhi have welcomed the Delhi Government Education Department's decision not to detain students up to Class VII. However, government-aided schools, which will also have to implement the decision, feared the move would lead to a fall in standards. "It's a welcome move. In fact, we do not detain students up to Class X," said Amita Wattal, principal of Springdales, Pusa Road. "Detaining a student does not help him or her perform better Rather, it has a negative effect," she said. She added that, unless the student suffers from a psychological or medical problem, everyone is promoted. "We monitor their progress. Even in Class X, if students perform badly, we counsel them to switch streams so that they can manage according to their capability," Wattal said. Modern School in Barakhamba follows the same principle. "The concept of fail and pass is old. We must ensure students remain interested in studies by evaluating their strengths and identifying their weaknesses," said Principal Lata Vaidyanathan. She added the concept of non-detention should be taken as good learning strategy and students should be evaluated properly. Click on "Full Story" for more...
However, government-aided schools are not too keen about the policy "I don't think we have a choice; we have to follow the rules," said Meenu, teacher at Vidya Bhawan Girls Senior Secondary School.
At Lady Irwin School, teachers feel the move will result in falling of standards. "Neither students nor parents will be serious about studying. They will just assume that they will pass," said a teacher on conditions of anonymity "Many students do not attend classes regularly or do miserably in tests and are detained. What about them?" she asked. However, lawyer and social activist Ashok Aggarwal said public schools only followed the policy of non-detention of students on paper "We have had many cases where public schools have detained students because they failed to score the required percentage in class exams," said Aggarwal. He also said government and government-aided schools arbitrarily detained students. "All schools violate this policy of non-detention of students till Class VII," Aggarwal said. On Tuesday, the Delhi Government decided to introduce a new grading system for students of classes V to VII in line with the new policy. Source: Hindustan Times, July-03-2008
