The Levy of separate entry tax for commercial vehicles entering Delhi through National Highway No. 8 (Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway) by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has attracted the ire of cab operators in Gurgaon.

While threatening to block traffic on this stretch and withdraw their services to the IT industry including BPOs, hundreds of cab operators and drivers created a ruckus at the toll plaza on the Expressway on Tuesday

No untoward incident was reported and traffic remained uninterrupted, as a heavy contingent of Gurgaon police was present.

Effective from June 1, the MCD slapped monthly entry charges of Rs 1,050 for every four-wheeler entering Delhi from NH-8 (also called Rajokari border). This is in addition to the monthly pass of Rs 1,050 that allowed commercial vehicles to enter Delhi from other borders of Gurgaon and other NCR towns.

Prabhakar Kumar, owner of Satguru Travels whose cabs ply for a number of IT and BPO companies said prior to June 1, the rate for the monthly pass for entering Delhi from any border was Rs 600 only and it was applicable on all entry and exit points on Delhi border.

"But from June 1, not only has MCD hiked the monthly pass charges to 1,050, but it is no more valid for the vehicles entering Delhi from NH-8. For this, we are forced to buy another monthly pass of Rs 1,050. It means the cost to enter Delhi from NH-8 has now increased from Rs 600 to Rs 2,100 per month. This is in addition to toll charges collected by DS Constructions of Rs 17 per trip at this toll plaza," Kumar said.

Those not going for monthly passes are required to pay Rs 35 per entry in addition to the Rs 17 per entry that DS Constructions charges for entering or exiting Delhi from Expressway Gurgaon has about 7,000 cabs ferrying employees within the city or to surrounding cities.

Cab operators demonstrated on the Gurgaon expressway, shouting anti-MCD slogans. "We have given an ultimatum of 10 days to MCD for withdrawing separate toll tax or else we will disrupt the traffic movement and also withdraw our cab services to the IT industry," threatened the operators.

MCD official Deep Mathur told the media that the notification on the revised levy of toll tax for commercial vehicles entering Delhi from outside was widely published well before June 1.
