For a gorgeous look for the city much before Commonwealth Games, the stinking dhalaos will soon be done away with. MCD has proposed that this valuable space will be used for ATM counters or flower shops. The idea is to generate revenue and employ door-to-door collection and segregation of the domestic garbage.

With the proposal, civic agency is also aiming at gaining substantial financial benefits. The MCD has already started communicating with banks and other private players to gauge the interest factor. "We have decided to start the initiative first in the posh colonies of South Delhi and then other parts of the city. We are expecting that there will be no problem in getting private players to utilise the dhalaos.

However, those that are in far flung areas, it might be difficult to put them to commercial use. This way, the MCD can also generate revenue by letting out these front facing points," said a senior official of the MCD.

The MCD is presently conducting a feasibility study to find out the most viable commercial use of around 5,000 dhalaos. Out of 5,000, about 2,000 are in South-West Delhi that would be rendered vacant after the civic body starts its door-to-door garbage segregation scheme.

The civic body is also planning to outsource these dhalaos to private firms to generate more revenue, which is likely to be estimated in crores.

After announcing the scheme, several private players reportedly approached MCD expressing intention to utilise the dhalaos for different commercial interests. "Discarding such a prime land does not make sense. After complete adoption of segregation policy, solid waste will no more be collected from dhalaos instead door-to-door segregation system will be carried out by MCD. The existing dhalaos will then be used to generate revenue," said Vijendra Gupta, chairman of the Standing Committee, MCD.

To commence the scheme from South Delhi is an ideal step, believe MCD officials. The civic body will also carry out a study to ascertain the commercially viable options.
