Job scene better in Delhi: Report, Govt claims unemployment in city less than national average

The unemployment rate in urban areas of Delhi is not only far less as compared to the national level but also lesser than states like Punjab, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra.

Here are the figures. The unemployment rate in urban areas of Delhi is 36 per thousand as compared to 48 per thousand in urban area at the national level, 37 per thousand in Haryana, 50 per thousand in Punjab, 47 per thousand in Karnataka, 39 per thousand in Tamil Nadu, 42 per thousand in Andhra Pradesh and 56 per thousand in Maharashtra.

This was revealed in a report on employment and unemployment situation in Delhi which has been prepared by the government's Directorate of Economics & Statistics. The report is based on the sample survey conducted during second round of National Sample Survey (NSS) during 2005-06. Delhi Finance Minister Dr A.K. Walia released the report on Tuesday.

The report has also revealed that out of the total unemployed persons in the Capital, less than 10 per cent were graduates. While 0.21 lakh were graduates, 0.30 lakh were educated up to 10+2 standard, 1.53 lakh had studied up to middle level and 0.23 lakh were illiterate.

Around 2 lakh were in the age group of 15-29 years According to the report, out of the total eligible persons for employment, about 54.26 lakh were employed whereas only 2.27 lakh persons were unemployed. In Delhi, 3.71 lakh persons got employment during 2005-06.

While giving further details, Dr Walia stated that out of 2.27 lakh unemployed persons, 1.98 lakh were male and the rest were female. Releasing the report, Walia said that out of total employed persons of 54.26 lakh about 51.71 lakh were employed in urban area and rest 2.55 lakh in the rural area.
