Supreme Court directed IGPL to give priority to public vehicles at its refilling stationsBy Riti, Section News
Following reports of an increasing number of car-owners going in for CNG kits, the Environment Pollution (Prevention and Control) Authority appointed by the Supreme Court has directed IGPL, the distributor of CNG in the city, to give priority to public vehicles at its refilling stations.
IGPL has also been asked to conduct a study on meeting the increasing demand of CNG by private vehicles in the wake of the hike in the prices of petrol and diesel. The exact number of CNG-run private vehicles in the city is unknown. The Delhi transport department has a record of only 35,000 cars running on CNG, while IGPL has a record of 1,22,485 private vehicles with CNG kits.
It can be safely assumed that a considerable number of these vehicles come from the city's satellite towns, but even then the transport department's data does not reflect reality.
According to sources, the reason for the anomaly is that many private vehicle owners with CNG kits do not register with the transport department as required. According to the data, there are a total of 2,27,947 public and private vehicles in the city running on CNG, which is available at only 163 filling stations, leading to long queues at most of them. These include 3,513 DTC buses, 8,642 private buses, 5,507 RTVs, 7,664 taxis and 82,262 autos. In Haryana, 15 per cent vehicles run on CNG, while in UP four per cent vehicles run on it. According to sources, if the demand and supply situation worsens in the near future, EPCA may direct IGPL to stop giving CNG to private vehicles.at all. Source:The Asian Age 23rdJune2008.
