Signature Bridge work to start soon, help ease traffic pressure from existing Wazirabad BridgeBy Sumit Kumar, Section Development
The proposed bridge will connect NH-I (Road No 45) on the western bank and Wazirabad Road (Road No 59) on the eastern bank of the river Yamuna.
After numerous hurdles, the Delhi government's ambitious Signature Bridge project will finally hit the road soon. It, however, would miss the deadline for the Commonwealth Games. But the project will help ease traffic pressure from the existing Wazirabad Bridge. The proposed bridge will connect NH-1 (Road No 45) on the Western bank and Wazirabad Road (Road No 59) on the Eastern bank of the river Yamuna. Till further decision, only fast moving vehicles will be allowed to use the bridge. According to the Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation (DTTDC) sources, the project was to be started a few years ago in time for the 2010 Commonwealth Games but due to some reason it missed the start- ing deadlines. The proposed east-west corridor will cater to the needs of commuters from Yamuna Vihar, Gokulpuri, Nand Nagri, interstate traffic from Ghaziabad, Sahibabad on the eastern side and Timarpur, Burari, Mukherjee Nagar, Mall Road and northwest Delhi on the western side. At present, the existing twolane barrage-cum-bridge at Wazirabad has been serving as a vital link between Delhi and UP for the last 50 years. The tremendous increase in volume of traffic using this bridge has far exceeded its designed capacity There has also been large-scale development in the trans-Yamuna area, which further resulted in the tremendous increase in traffic volume.
Based on traffic studies and topographic survey, various alternatives for the bridge alignment were considered and it was decided that the proposed bridge would be constructed 600 m downstream of the existing barrage-cum-bridge. The total cost of the project is Rs 887 crore. The total length of the main bridge is 675 m. As per the approved concept design, the proposed bridge will have a bowshaped pylon (a steel tower or mast) about 154 m high with ca- ble stays on one side and back stays on other side. The main span of the bridge is 251 m with approach spans on either side. The bridge will have four lanes on either side of the road (14 m each) with a 1.2 m wide central verge, space for anchoring cables, maintenance walkway and crash barrier on either side of the central verge. The grade separators consisting of flyovers, ramps and loops have been proposed to allow signal free traffic movement at the proposed intersection of the bridge with Road No 45 and existing intersections at Timarpur, Nehru Vihar and Wazirabad. The width of the carriageway of grade separators has been provided as per traffic requirement including, future projection of traffic. Source: HT's Live, May-09-2008
