People in the city are up in arms against the complicated procedure of paying their property taxes.

The property tax is baffling people as, according to them, the leaders in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi are not paying any heed to making rules and regulations for payment of taxes public. The rules has been suddenly changed this year. Moreover, the daily changes in statements of the leaders are adding to their woes.

According to members of the resident welfare associations (RWAs), neither the portal, which was exclusively designed for the making the payment of property taxes online, is working well nor are forms available.

"The online procedure is very intricate and requires minute details and everybody is not so computer-savvy that they can deposit their taxes online," said Mr Atul Goel, a member of Pitampura RWA.

"Earlier, they said only online application form will be accepted and now when manual applications are also invited, there are no forms to apply," he said.

A delegation of seven RWAs from different zones of the city met the MCD leaders on Tuesday and put forward their complaints and ignorance about the changes in rules.

"There is a drastic change between forms of previous year and current year for the payment of property taxes. They altered the forms and people are not able to fill it up correctly as there is so much confusion prevailing regarding this matter," he said.

"This year's property tax forms indicate that people above the age of 65 years will be given the status of senior citizenship whereas in the previous years any person above the age of 60 years was given benefits of senior citizenship," said Mr R.K. Khanna, the co-coordinator of the RWAs.

"Similarly, the portal and forms say that senior citizens will not get any rebate if he/she is one of the joint owners of the property whereas they have been getting those rebates till now," Mr Khanna said.
