City's Lesser-Known Monuments Will Benefit From Rs 26 crore Allocated To ASI By Plan PanelBy sachiv, Section Development
The countdown to the prestigious Commonwealth Games, which the Capital will be hosting in August, 2010 has officially begun. Delhi is expected to welcome visitors from all over the world, and the Centre is gearing up to ensure one gets a feel of Delhi's history and rich cultural heritage along with the sporting event.
In response to a proposal sent by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) seeking additional funding, the Planning Commission has allocated a whopping sum of Rs 26 crore to ASI's Delhi Circle to upgrade the city's rich heritage. While 64 monuments were initially identified for this work, the number of structures which are now included in this plan have been brought down to 46. A senior official explained: ``Time is of the essence now. The monuments idenified require a lot of attention. With just two years to go, it is essential to cut down on the initial number we had thought.'' ![]() This time it not just the popular big structures like Purana Qila or Safdarjung Tomb that are included in the Commonwealth Games plan. ASI officials said a good number of the 46 identified monuments were lesser-known, small structures like Badli ki Sarai, Flagstaff Towers, Chauburza Mosque etc. ``These monuments are situated on frequently used roads and important intersections. When someone is passing it, they should know the importance of this monument and what it stood for,'' explained a senior ASI official. Click on "Full Story" for more...
Added the official: ``Approach roads to monuments also need special attention and we are in talks with the concerned civic authorities over this. Different monuments have various needs that require attention like making pathways, structural repairs, illumination etc. The idea is to improve the overall ambience of the site itself and make it more approachable and attractive for visitors.''
Some of the identified monuments for this work are Kashmere Gate, Shalimar Bagh, Chauburza Mosque, Flagstaff Towers, Siri Wall, Red Fort, Humayun's Tomb, monuments in JNU, Safdarjung Tomb, Lodhi Garden tombs, Adilabad Fort. Tughlakabad Fort, Neela Gumbad etc. A few months ago, ASI's Delhi Circle had sent a proposal seeking Rs 33 crore from the Planning Commission for the Commonwealth Games in 2010. This is separate from the Rs 8 crore that ASI's Delhi circle has sought for the current fiscal ending March 31, 2009. The annual allocation is yet to come to the ASI. According to sources, talks are also on with Delhi Tourism to get more guides for all sites, particularly world heritage monuments. ``We are planning to set up more canteens, visual and informative boards, disable-friendly facilities in more monuments. Special focus will be on the world heritage sites as per Unesco guidelines,'' said an official. With staff crunch and lack of sufficient expertise also a big hurdle in monument conservation, the ASI is also planning to rope in ex-ASI engineers and conservationists to help speed up preparations for the Games. ``Many of our retired engineers and staffers are experts in the field of conservation and will be able to supervise the work currently going on. We are also going to outsource more work to be able to meet out deadline,'' said an official. Much conservation work is already going on in full swing in a number of monuments and the ASI is hoping to complete almost 65% of the preparatory work for the prestigious Games by April, 2009.
