On NDMC Radar: Machines To Guide Your Car In, Out Of Palika ParkingBy Yash, Section Development
Of the New Delhi Municipal Council has its way, electronic equipment would soon guide you through the maze of the two-tier Palika under ground parking lot at Connaught Place. And, if you are anxious for a guard to guide you through, you will be disappointed the new system will do away with personnel guiding traffic pouring into the lot.
Once the proposed electronic guidance and parking management system is in place, car users will be guided through a wide range of electronic equipment such as sensors, lights, signboards and directional displays to the closest vacant car space available in the lot. There will be an online guiding system at each intersection to guide cars through to the exact spot for parking in one of the city's busiest lots. ![]() The system will also help locate your car at the time of exit, a senior NDMC official said. "Also, people often don't know how to get to the next level, or where to park. This means they have to wait for the guards to direct them. This will be made more convenient when the new system is in place," the official said. The automated parking guidance facility in fact may outsmart by two years the three "world-class" automated multi-level parking lots on the Council's planning radar for long. Officials said one of the reasons for the new parking system is the oft-repeated complaint of the traffic police that rows of waiting cars are a constant hurdle to easy flow of traffic on Baba Kharak Singh Marg, and at the entry to the Inner Circle. The proposed system will help resolve congestion and long queues at entrance and exit points, the NDMC official said.
According to the official, the civic body has roped in a private consultant to design the system; the Rs 2.67-crore project would be implemented within 12 months of the design being approved. The Palika parking lot has a capacity of appximately 1,200 cars and has two levels. In 2005 the civic body had installed LED signboards outside the parking lot, along the Outer Circle, to display the status of space availability. The new plan also proposes reversal of the existing entry and exit points to the parking lot as an alternative traffic movement plan. The NDMC, however, clarified the final decision on the reversal would be subject to a review by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), the Palika Bazaar Market Association and consultants among others.
