Government School Students To Be Trained For 2010 Commonwealth GamesBy sachiv, Section CommonWealth Games 2010
A good knowledge about the Commonwealth Games and general directions are other things that schoolchildren will be taught about.
Delhi Government school children will soon get lessons on how to become good hosts for the 2010 Commonwealth Games. Aiming to make gracious hosts out of student volunteers, the revised school adolescent education programme handbook for 2008-09 will have chapters on eti- quettes and behaviour, tips on how to deal with foreign tourists and become knowledgeable about Delhi. "YUVA, the handbook for teachers has been completely revised. We have dedicated chapters on how schoolchildren can become good hosts by learning to speak in English and being able to answer questions about Delhi," said Rina Ray, Education Secretary. A good knowledge about the Commonwealth Games, such as the number of events, countries participating, location of events and general directions are other things that schoolchildren will be taught about. "If students volunteer then they will be expected to guide tourists around. People with ask them questions about the events and their city. They would want to know where to go and shop, which monuments to visit and about places to eat," said Ray. According to the organizing committee of 2010 Commonwealth Games 25,000 volunteers will be required, a good chunk of them students. Another chapter in the handbook is titied 'Have you done PTS today'. "PTS stand for Please Thank you and Sorry These are basic etiquettes that schoolchildren need to inculcate, not only for the Commonwealth Games but also in their lives," said Ray. She added that teachers would play a big role is making sure that students refined their behaviour and knowledge. Another new addition to the handbook is a more glamourised healthy eating plan. For instance, the boring tinde ki sabzi has been re-christened as Deepika Dilbahar "Although the previous handbook had chapters on healthy eating, we have tried to make it more interesting this time by naming diets after the likes of Shahrukh Khan and Deepika Padukone," said Ray. "Nobody wants to read about the benefits of bhindi and tinda. Now they will at least go through the diets just for the sake of their idols," said Ray Source: HT, 18/04/2008
