Delhi'ites should gear up for a dark powerless summer ahead. Long drawn outages seem to be back and the city got a taste of it on Sunday.

It was the second time in 72 hours that Delhi and many parts of north India plunged into darkness in the early hours of Sunday on account of major disturbance in the Northern Grid. The Capital went without power for 12 hours and normal supply was restored only by mid noon. Adjoining areas like Gurgaon, Faridabad, Noida and Ghaziabad also remained in the dark for the better part of Sunday morning.

The Sunday story
On Sunday, Delhi's peak power demand during the evening hours was 2495 MW. As against this, the Capital's five power plants generated just 1075 MW - not even 50 per cent of its requirement.

Rajghat  135 MW Installed Capacity.Actual Generation On Sunday was  5MW.
Indraprastha 247.5 MW Installed Capacity .117 MW Actual generation On Sunday.
Gas Turbine 282 MW Installed  capacity .150 MW Actual Generation On Sunday .
Pragat-I 330 MW Installed capacity. 101MW Actual Generation On Sunday.
BTPS 740 Installed capacity .623MW Actual Capacity On Sunday.

** Figures taken from State Load Dispatch Centre at 5.20 p.m. on Sunday

What Caused The outages?

  • Northern Grid partially collapsed. Heavy fog caused 35 power lines to trip in the northern region. Six transmission lines tripped in Delhi.

  • Delhi, the 400 KV BawanaBamnauli-Mandola line was affected and caused a shortfall of 1300 MW in Delhi resulting in over 12 hour outages in most parts of the Capital.

  • Worst affected areas were Mayur Vihar, Patparganj, Vasundhara, Dwarka, Paschim Vihar, Janakpuri, Pitampura, Chandni Chowk, Lajpat Nagar, Kalkaji, Gulmohar Park, Alaknanda, Chittaranjan Park among others.

  • Power and water supply, and rail services were badly affected.

How did It Happen?

* Smog that has high moisture content deposited on the insulators of power lines causing them to trip.

Could It Have Been Avoided?

  • Experts said regular cleaning of insulators could have averted the problem.
  • Fog deposition on power lines is a regular phenomenon during winter. The authorities should have undertaken preventive maintenance measures like timely clean-ups.
  • Installing advanced electrical gadgets like anti-fog insulators can go a long way in addressing the problem.

Union power secretary Anil Razdan called an emergency meeting on Sunday after the partial collapse. In the meeting, it was decided that conventional insulators would be replaced with polymer insulators on all vulnerable lines in Delhi and the NCR before November. Besides, officials have been directed to start cleaning on Dadri-Mandaula, Bawana-Hissar, Rihand-Dadri power line. Delhi Transco - the government utility that transmits power in the Capital - has been directed to start cleaning work on Mandola Bawana circuits.

Heavy fog deposited on the insulators resulted in tripping of 35 power lines in the Northern Grid. A ripple effect was felt in the Capital where six transmission lines tripped. Rail lines and water supply was disrupted.

While the northern region reeled under 4000 MW shortfall, Delhi had a shortage of 1300 MW "Heavy fog in western UP, Punjab, Haryana and Delhi caused the tripping. It is completely unprecedented for this time of the year. Our staff is working on a war footing to clean the insulators," said an official of Power Grid Corporation of India Limited.

In the Capital, three of the city's five power plants - GTPS, Rajghat and Pragat - were ftmetioning to half its capacity Areas like Dwarka, Palam, Janakpuri, Paschim Vihar, Pitampura, Ashok Vihar, Patparganj, Mayur Vihar remained without power for 12 hours. In south Delhi, areas like Sriniwaspuri, Kalkaji, Greater Kailash, Alakhnanda and C.R. Park faced cuts every thirty minutes for almost 10 hours.

Experts said the power situation in the city during the coming months would continue to be grim. "Though we are anticipating a demand of 4400 MW, the private power utilities have arranged just 3300 MW power till now. So to start with Delhi will be short of 1000 MW God help us if the demand goes beyond 4400 MW," said an official with the power ministry.

People are agitated. "The government is taking us for a ride. How long will this go on. Since the past one week, we are facing six hour power cuts every day," said Kavita Singh, a Dwarka resident.
