Rush for nursery admissions to begin today

If the planned sale of admission forms at Modern School in Vasant Vihar is any indication, getting your child into nursery at a good school is not going to be easy. The Modern School in Vasant Vihar and its junior branch R S Junior Modern School at Humayun Road will sell admission forms for nursery admission for just one day, that is on Saturday, and that too from 8.30 am to 1 pm.

Parents keen to admit their children to Modern School have been keeping a close watch on the schedule of the school. Though the school's branch at Barakhamba Road hasn't come out with a date for sale of forms yet, the other two branches are expected to see parents lining up for forms from early morning on Saturday.

"I had been keeping an eye on the schedule of different schools and Modern School is the first among them to release the forms. Saturday will be an important day and I don't want to miss the chance. I have even taken a half-day leave from work,'' said Rajni Mehta, parent of a three-year-old from Krishna Nagar.

The parents will be required to carry a photocopy of the birth certificate of the child to collect the form. The submission date of the form will be given to parents when they collect the form.

Schools in south Delhi are expected to get maximum number of applications for nursery admissions. "Apart from parents in south Delhi, we get a lot of applications from parents who reside in east and west Delhi. Even if the parents have already got a seat for their children in schools in Ghaziabad or Dwarka, about 50-70% of them still take a chance by registering in the schools which are better known,'' said Madhulika Sen, principal, Tagore International School, Vasant Vihar. The school will start selling the forms from December 3-8 and parents can submit them till December 15.

Usha Ram, principal of Laxman Public School at Hauz Khas, said parents moving towards the NCR region may make a difference to the schools in east Delhi but not too much to them. "We get students from Mayur Vihar, Model Town, Gurgaon and even west Delhi. Last year, we received about 2000 applications for 140 seats,'' Ram said.

Amity International School in Saket also got around 4000 applications for 70 seats last year and the scene will be similar this year, says the principal. "We get students from east Delhi too. So the pressure on the school hasn't decreased,'' said principal, Bharti Sharma.

However, some schools do agree that the rush for nursery admission in south Delhi schools has reduced as parents have diverted their preference. "The rush is definitely less for pre-school but then many parents who don't get a seat in nursery come back next year,'' said Vinay Kumar, principal, DPS Vasant Kunj.
