60 GPS-fitted Metro feeder buses to hit the road soonBy Mrs Gupta, Section Transportation
In an attempt to make its feeder service as good as the world-class trains, DMRC will now introduce buses fitted with global positioning system (GPS) on about 36 feeder routes.
In comparison to the existing feeder buses mainly RTVs owned by contractors the new fleet will be owned by DMRC and given to contractors on a lease and transfer basis. The decision was taken after a survey revealed that the existing feeder buses were not of the expected standard, due to which several areas remained untapped by Metro. Initially, DMRC will buy 60 CNGrun Swaraj Mazda and Tata buses. ``After assessing viability of the service, the number may gradually be increased to 400. We have given out tenders and the new buses will hit the road in two to three months,'' said Anuj Dayal, DMRC's chief spokesperson. However, the new service will be more expensive for commuters with a proposed fare structure of Rs 5 up to the first 8 km and Rs 8 for over 8 km. The minimum fare of the existing feeders is Rs 2. But this will be finalised only after being reviewed by the State Transport Authority (STA).
Metro is also planning to issue monthly passes of Rs 450 for up to 8 km and Rs 720 for more than 8 km. DMRC is also planning to integrate the Metro smart cards into buses so that commuters can use them to buy feeder bus tickets as well.
A control room will be set up for the GPS-fitted buses to track their movement. The buses with firstaid boxes and fire extinguishers will have uniformed drivers. Residents of Rohini Sector-22, Delhi Secretariat, Anand Parbat, New Rajinder Nagar, Janakpuri, Vishnu Garden, Mayapuri Industrial Area-I, Paschim Vihar, Sadar Bazar, Vivek Vihar, Preet Vihar, Sonia Vihar extension, Vasundhara Enclave, Mahendra Enclave, Nirankari Colony, Azadpur, Rani Bagh, Badli, Pushpanjali West Enclave, New Ashok Nagar, Mahavir Enclave-III, Dabri, Najafgarh, Bijwasan Border and Palam Vihar will be benefited. Some of the Metro stations that will be covered are Welcome, Shastri Park, Vishwavidyalaya, Inderlok, Keshav Puram, Netaji Subhash Place, Pitampura, Rohini East, Rohini West, Kirti Nagar, Indraprastha, Subhash Nagar, Janakpuri West, Dwarka More, Dwarka Sector 10, 11, 14 and 16. The existing 413 RTV buses running on 32 routes will be unaffected by the new scheme and continue as usual. Source- The Times Of India, Dated, May-23,2007
