May Is Cool, Warmmg Be DamnedBy siddharth22, Section Environment
Hot May is turning out to be rather cool. May - usually the Capital's hottest month - in 2007 has been the coolest in the past 20 years, according to data compiled by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). There were only four days this May when the mercury touched a red-hot 41 degrees Celsius.
In 2002, there were 22 days in May when the maximum temperature reached 41 degrees. In May 1998, there were 23 such days and in May 1984, 29. The fair number of showers and thunderstorms in Delhi this month have kept the temperature down. "We have seen far too much rainbearing western disturbances, and thunderstorms," said Dr J.B. Singh of National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting. Dr U.C. Mohanty of IIT-Delhi's Centre for Atmospheric Sciences said the absence of dust storms this month was another reason. Was global warming in any way responsible? "Fluctuations in daily weather are quite normal. One year's weather data cannot be the basis of global warming projections," said S.C. Bhan, director of IMD's Safdarjung unit. Source: Hindustan Times,24 may 2007
