MCD Polls Mark BSP's Big Bang Entry in CityBy rachit, Section News
The MCD poll results go beyond BJP's triumph and Congress's loss. The message is that BSP has arrived on Delhi's election scene and looks like it is going to be around for a while. It did not just bag an impressive 17 seats, it reaped 9.9% of the votes, which is more than Congress's vote share in UP.
That Mayawati's party has emerged as a powerhouse is borne out by the fact that out of 42.5 lakh valid votes polled, BSP picked up its 9.9% share in 224 wards where it had fielded its candidates. BJP secured 36.2% of the votes and Congress lagged behind the saffron party by about 7%. BSP's cut of popular vote clearly left Congress reeling against the ropes. In all, 42,54,235 votes were polled. Of this, 15,38,838 went to BJP and 12,40,961 to Congress. BSP polled 4,20,837 votes. This means, it has managed to damage Congress's prospects significantly, often emerging a close third behind the former ruling party. BSP nominees were third in 69 seats and finished second in 16 seats. For a party that had barely a presence in the 2002 MCD polls when it won just one seat, BSP now looks set to impact the 2008 assembly polls. Going by electoral logic of Delhi elections that a division of votes helps BJP, Congress faces a worrisome situation. Evidence that Muslims, too, have not voted en bloc for Congress only makes the scenario bleaker. The seats that BSP has won make it quite clear that Congress's monopoly on slum, JJ colonies and some resettlement colonies has been shaken. BSP is the new ``arbiter'' for votes of Dalits and depressed castes in the city. And should the party set up nominees in all 70 assembly seats in 2008, it is sure to make its presence felt. In 80 of the 224 MCD seats the party contested, its candidates got more than 2,000 votes.
BSP got 9.9% of votes, spoilt Cong party. In the recently-concluded civic polls, the BSP was a huge success for the first time. The UP-based party secured 9.9% of popular vote share and bagged 17 seats in the 272-member House. Interestingly, the Congress had to pay a huge price for the BSP foray, as the Mayawati-led party cut into the vote share of the Congress and helped BJP score an emphatic win at the hustings.
In 80 of the 224 seats the party contested, its candidates got more than 2,000 votes. The highest was 7,711 in Madanpur Khadar, a seat reserved for women which BSP's Kamlesh won. The close contest between Congress and BSP is reflected in the results. For instance, in Bankner while BJP emerged winner with 5,209 votes, Congress followed with 3,691 and BSP came third with 3,400. The damage BSP has inflicted can be also be seen in Malkaganj, where Congress lost to BJP by just two votes. BJP got 7,720 votes, Congress got 7,718 and BSP has almost 3,000 votes. At Sarai Pipal Thala, BJP won with 3,062 votes. BSP followed with 2,907 and Congress could barely manage 1,896. Bhalaswa is another example. Here BJP clocked 6,249 votes, BSP was second with 4,026 and Congress third with 2,526. In Jahangir Pur-II ward, BJP won with 6,058 votes, BSP was first runner-up with 3,947. Congress polled 3,321 votes. In Begumpur, BJP won with 10,368 votes, Congress came second with 8,388 and BSP got 1,646. Results for Pooth Kalan, a seat reserved for SC woman, saw BJP getting 8,431 votes, Congress 4,229 and BSP 2,725. In another SC seat, Sahibabad Daulatpur, BJP topped with 6,029 votes, BSP followed with 5,173 and Congress had 4,779. The 17 seats where BSP won include Narela, Bakhtawarpur, Sultanpuri South, Tekhand, Gharoli, Ghonda and Mayur Vihar-I. BSP candidates won in Madanpur Khadar, Mahavir Enclave, Vijay Vihar and Pratap Vihar wards, which were reserved for women candidates. BSP won seats reserved for scheduled castes in Kondli, Harkesh Nagar, Kirari Suleman Nagar and Mangolpuri North. (Source-Times Of India, 10/04/07)
