Seeking certification from the American Joint Commission for Accreditation (JCA) the Health Department of the Delhi Government has started improving infrastructure and services in five major hospitals.

The department has identified Ayurvedic and Unani Medical College and Hospital at Karol Bagh, Ayurvedic College at Khera Dabar, Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC), Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) Hospital and Guru Tegh Bahadur (GTB) Hospital for the upgrade to international standards.

"Upgradation process is on at all these hospitals after which we pro- pose to seek accreditation," said K S Wahi, Special Secretary (Health) in the Delhi Government.

The accreditation gives priority to standards related to available norms such as requirement of equipment, human resources and space availability.

"Accreditation is based on achieving some basic standards of quality. We have already started working in that direction by focusing on the need of the public," said Dr Arun Aggarwal, Dean, MAMC.

With a people-centric approach, consultants, including engineers, architects and health experts, will soon be appointed to oversee the development work in these hospitals.

"The accreditation is about procedures, keeping records. It should be people friendly and not department friendly. Once the system is in place, complaints will be docu mented and procedures will become transparent," added Wahi.

Though there have been attempts in some states to institutionalise uniform standards for hospitals, except for Indraprastha Apollo Hospital and Wockhardt Hospital, Mumbai, no other hospital in the country has got an accreditation from the Joint Commission for Accreditation.

Another important condition for hospitals seeking accreditation is that the systems should be accessible and acceptable to service seekers.

Also the services should be userfriendly, information on services should be available to users and grievances redressing services should be in place.
