An amphitheatre will be the first to open its doors; the rest of the Haat, about 70 per cent ready, will be completed by October this year

A HOUSEBOAT in an artificial waterbody is set to be the biggest attraction of the new Dilli Haat that will partially open in Pitampura on March 18. The houseboat idea, not surprisingly, has come from the Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Department.

P K Dey, Executive Engineer (Civil), Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation, who is in charge of the Pitampura Dilli Haat says an amphitheatre in the new Haat will be open in two weeks with a function being organised to launch the attraction. The full Haat, which is about 70 per cent ready now, will be completed by October this year.

Delhi heart

The new Dilli Haat will have 128 craft shops compared to 80 at the INA Market Haat and will also feature a spice market where spices and handicrafts from all over India will be sold. Dey explains that a lot of emphasis has been placed on greenery and the Pitampura Haat, located between the TV Tower and Delhi Metro's Line 1, will have terrace gardens. There will also be a sewage treatment plant to treat kitchen waste and sewage.

The first Dilli Haat came up on a six acre plot in front of the INA market in 1992 with a view to allow rural artisans to sell their products directly to customers. "The intent of the Development Commissioner Handicrafts and Handlooms was to encourage the handicrafts and handlooms but food acted as a big sup porting factor in enhancing its popularity," says Pradeep Sachdeva, who has designed both the Dilli Haats.

The Pitampura Haat will have a fully airconditioned arts gallery and a restaurant for "fine dining" as well as a big conference room which can accommodate 140-150 people and a dormitory for visiting craftsmen. There will also be two food courts with 20 shops.

The capacity of the amphitheatre is 450-500 people. The INA Market Dilli Haat does not have any airconditioned restaurants.

The 7.2 acre Pitampura Haat will have four emergency fire exits as well as basement parking. "The basement of the Haat can accommodate 250 cars and as many twowheelers. The INA one doesn't have parking on its premises," Dey says.
