Work on the Naraina flyover finally started today, a year-and-a half after it was conceptualised.

The 1.6-km long flyover, one of the 26 planned for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, will be the 22nd on the Ring Road.

A Delhi Public Works Department official said the delay in starting the work was due to the difficulty in removing the large number of encroachments on the flyover route. Also, a court had ordered a stay on construction after a chain of medical shops filed a suit against the PWD.

Project Highlight

  • Estimated Cost: Rs 199 crore

  • Length of the flyover: 106 km

  • Pedestrian subways at two points

The Rs 119-crore flyover is scheduled to be ready by the end of 2008, well in time for the Games.

Officials say the flyover was a necessity because of the high traffic density in the area, around 12,500 passenger car units per per hour.

The flyover is expected to ease the logjam at the turn towards Loha Mandi on the Ring Road.

The three-lane dual carriageway will have a "Segmental Arch" construction, that is , it will have prefabricated segments that would be joined and set on top of pillars constructed on the site.

"Since Naraina is a very crowded area, it is difficult to carry out the entire construction there. So, the segments will be made in a yard near Nizamuddin Bridge and set up there," said the official. The flyover will also have two pedestrian subways.

The next flyover in the 2010 Games series will come up in Mongolpuri. Other major flyovers to be ready by 2008 include the bridge over Neela Hauz; the underpass and cloverleaf flyover at ITO chungi; the RUB connecting Roads No 58 to 64; the RCC underpass to Shastri Park on the Eastern Approach Road; the Mukarba Chowk flyover and flyovers at Aruna Asaf Ali Marg, Nelson Mandela Marg and Rao Tula Ram Marg Road.
