Sector 24 Dwarka to have India's biggest convention centreBy sachiv, Section Development
DELHI WILL soon become a preferred destination for big corporate houses to host their seminars and conventions.
The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) is clearing the decks for work to start at the proposed international convention centre at Sector 24, Dwarka. The convention centre with a seating capacity of 12,000 will be the biggest in the country. The Rs 2,000 crore state-ofthe-art project, located 5 km from the international airport, will have facilities such as convention hall, auditoriums, conference rooms, exhibition space and banquet halls. What's more, two-star hotels with a total capacity of 850 rooms will also come up in the vicinity, in a 14hectare area. V.D. Dewan, chief architect, DDA, said, "The idea is to have facilities which complement each other, thereby making the project financially sustainable." The DDA is in the process of inviting bids for the proposed convention centre. Dinesh Rai, DDA vice-chairman, said, "We will invite bids for constructing the convention centre by the end of this month. The project will be completed in time for the 2010 Commonwealth Games. The consultants have submitted the project report and we are working on the final details."
At present, the largest convention centre in India is at Hyderabad and has a seating capacity of 6,000. The Dwarka convention centre will be similar to the one in Hyderabad.
"We propose to have one big hall, which can be converted into smaller halls by partitioning them. This way at any given time, if required, the centre can be used for holding five-six functions. The emphasis is to have a flexible seating configuration to make it sus tainable," said Dewan. There is a paucity of big convention centres in the city. Apart from five-star hotels, the only options available for holding big conventions are Vigyan Bhavan, India Habitat Centre, Siri Fort, Pragati Maidan and India International Centre. The five together have a seating capacity of 3,200. The new convention centre will be based on the public-private partnership model in which DDA will own the land while the private developer will build, operate and run the centre. moushumi.gupta@ hindustantimes.com Ambitious scale Seating capacity of the International Convention Centre: 12,000 Size: 38,000 square metre.
