Asks him to withdraw tariff hike, or face agitation

Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party president Harsh Vardhan on Wednesday wrote to Reliance Energy chairman Anil Ambani asking him to withdraw the 10 per cent power tariff hike in the Capital failing which the party would be forced to launch an agitation.

He also warned that the BJP would not allow the Ambani-owned discom BSES to disconnect power of those consumers who have paid their bills after deducting 10 per cent from the total amount.

Addressing a press conference here, Dr. Vardhan said the party would also gherao the employees and officials of BSES who would come to disconnect the power connections of such consumers.

In his letter to Mr. Ambani, the BJP leader has alleged that the two power distribution companies, BSES Yamuna Power Limited and BSES Rajdhani Limited, supplying power to more than two-thirds of Delhi are looting the consumers. Fast running meters are being installed forcibly.

The infrastructure of power distribution system is in a bad shape. Instead of replacing this defunct infrastructure, the companies are only interested in increasing the tariff.

The letter further states that the BJP has decided that the people of Delhi will not pay the third consecutive power tariff hike effected by BSES. The Residents' Welfare Associations, industry and trade organisations, power consumers and social organisations have agreed to the decision and are cooperating with the movement. He advised Mr. Ambani "to immediately issue orders to the officers of his two distribution companies that power supply of those consumers who do not pay the 10 per cent hike should not be disconnected. Otherwise the BJP workers would be forced to gherao the offices and employees of the companies at the site."
