DTTDC sets 18 months deadline for completion Construction of two state-of-the-art underpass projects at Moolchand Crossing in South Delhi and Prem Bari Bridge in North-West Delhi has begun

Taking yet another step towards making the Capital's vast circular Ring Road a signal-free stretch, the Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation (DTTDC) has started work on construction of two state-of-the-art underpass projects at Moolchand Crossing in South Delhi and Prem Bari Bridge in North-West Delhi.

These two points on Ring Road have come to be a nightmare for lakhs of commuters as traffic jams have become commonplace.

According to the DTTDC Managing Director, Ramesh Negi, work on the Moolchand Crossing project has been awarded to M/s. Afcons who have been given 18 months to complete it.

The work on shifting of service lines and other utilities has already been started and the attempt would be to throw open the flyover to the public well before the two year deadline.

Stating that the Rs. 28-crore project was a prestigious one for the organisation, Mr. Negi said the experience of constructing the Madhuban Chowk underpass and the Lajpat Nagar-Srinivaspuri flyover projects had got the Corporation a lot of plaudits for the fine work and ensuring that aesthetics were kept uppermost in the mind.

Mr. Negi said in both underpass projects, it would be kept in mind that the interiors and exteriors are tastefully done up with the help of professionals.

The intersection at Prem Bari Bridge between Ring Road and Road No. 37 is a very busy point. To facilitate smooth movement of traffic at this location, it was decided to provide a grade separator at this intersection.

After considering various alternatives and site constraints, an underpass was found to be the most viable solution. Mr. Negi said the proposed underpass when completed in 15 months would result in uninterrupted movement of vehicles along Ring Road.

Intersection

The proposed underpass is about 255 metres long consisting of 220 metres open area and 35 metres long covered portion at the intersection to provide a platform for the right turning traffic as well as straight traffic on Raja Nahar Singh Marg.

The project has already got approval from the DDA Technical Committee as well as the Delhi Urban Art Commission. He said money had been paid for widening of the existing bridge of West Yamuna canal and for shifting of utility services. This particular point has emerged as a big bottleneck on Ring Road affecting the movement of traffic towards Rohini, Pitampura, Shalimar Bagh and other adjoining areas.

As for the Moolchand underpass project, work has been awarded and is likely to be completed within a record 18 months. The project is likely to cost Rs. 38 crores and it has been given to the same company that executed the Madhuban Chowk underpass for DTTDC.

The Moolchand Crossing has become a nightmare for those passing through this area in South Delhi.

Long queues of vehicles stretching up to the Andrews Ganj flyover at times and the Lajpat Nagar-Srinivaspuri flyover on the other side have become the order of the day. Those coming from Ashram Chowk and going towards South Extension or towards Defence Colony have a harrowing time passing through this point.

This is one of the main reasons for constructing an underpass to make the crossing a signal free area.

The underpass project had been hanging fire for a long time as the DDA's Technical Committee had held it up after certain objections were raised by the then Lieutenant-Governor, Vijai Kapoor. Although the project was not cancelled, it was also not granted clearance.

signal free traffic (none / 0) (#2)

Very True

The solution to traffic problems does not lies with making more flyovers but the policy makers in this country think of the easy way out

The curbs will mean to take few unpleasent decisions.  But none is ready to take such decisions. In a country where the democracy has meant more like mobocracy, The Culprits like in Delhi Sikh Roits go scot free in the back drop of mobs.

So who will bell this cat.

Let me say another thing

On Naraina Crossing there may not be need to build a fly over. They can close the cut at naraina crossing and make a U turn some where in between Naraina and Brar Square. And people coming from Naraina going towards Mayapuri should be told to take a left from Naraina Take U turn and go. This will not only save crores but also smoothen traffic. A vice versa for people coming from Brara Square towards Naraina can take a u Turn under Mayapuri Flyover But who will bell this cat.

Are flyovers are final solutions for traffic. Wworldwide all big cities have flyoers criss crossing each other but still massive traffic jam they faced in cites.

In Delhi every new flyover has increased the traffic pressure on adjoining roads & colonies.More & more traffic is getting added to roads & to non-available parking space.

I think this is the  time to sincerly think about this problem & its solution.

a.Strengthening of public transport.
b.Relocation of most frequently visited places to other areas.
c.Providing bypass to traffic not meant for Delhi.
d.Discouraging people to use their own vehicles.
e.More taxes & duties on bigger cars
f. Self control to keep cars off the road atleast once in a week.
