Employment In Infrastructure Sector Picks Up According To An Assocham Placement Pattern (APP) Study

By ugesh sarkar, Section Jobs Wanted/Available
Posted on Thu Aug 21, 2008 at 09:56:21 PM EST

In wake of the huge private and government investments lined up in the infrastructure projects, pace of employment generation in the sector has risen significantly as evident from a share of 12 per cent in the total employment opportunities generated in the first three months of the fiscal, according to an Assocham placement pattern (APP) study.

The APP study - Job trends in infrastructure sector - has also revealed that the sector comprising aviation, construction, energy, core infrastructure and metals & mining, have jointly contributed a significant share of 12 per cent to the job vacancies posted in first quarter of this fiscal.

The study comprised a sample size of total 1,05,638 jobs generated, spreading over 55 cities categorised in three tiers according to the size, population and other demographic characteristics. The sector created a 12,580 job opportunities out of the total sample size between April-June'08.

However, if one looks at the period between 2000-2005 employment in the organised sector, it has been stagnant and a declining trend can be seen in the infrastructure sector of electricity, gas, water and construction shows a study conducted by PHD Chambers of Commerce.

IT Firms Slow Campus Hires, US slowdown hits job in India. some firms even withdrawing offer latter

By Dr arvind, Section Jobs Wanted/Available
Posted on Tue Aug 12, 2008 at 03:44:19 AM EST

From Matrimonials to swank offices, software engineers have been much sought after since the information technology boom brought thousands of lucrative jobs into India. Times are changing, though.

As the US economy goes from bad to worse, India's biggest outsourcing customer is getting stingy about placing new orders.

Why hirings are down

  • The IT-BPO industry, which generates $40 billion (Rs 1.72 lakh crore) in export revenue and employs 2 million people, has been hit by slowing growth.
  • The US, which accounts for 70% of India's outsourcing orders, is cutting IT budgets.
  • IBM hasn't recruited at all this year from Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai, from where it picked 66 students last year.

Survival tips
What IT professionals can do to ride out the turbulence:
  • Join the right company, not the one that pays you the most.
  • Invest in skill, competence on your own, don't outsource it to the company.
  • Work hard. You can't take it easy at such a time.
  • Have patience, the good times will return.
(As suggested by HCL Technologies CEO Vineet Nayar) But economic troubles at home appear to have slowed IBM's hiring plans.

The result: IT firms are hiring less and offering less as they pick talent from campuses.

In some cases, they are even refusing to go through with offers they've already made.

This is the first time since the outsourcing boom began a decade ago that IT companies are dragging their feet on campus hiring, placement officers at colleges across India told Hindustan Times.

"This year, there has been a 15 per cent drop in hiring from our campus," said Colonel P. Ramesh at Pune-based Army Institute of Technology, from where only 194 students were picked this year, compared to 232 last year The drop was sharper at Pune Vidyarthi Griha - down to 131 from 260 last year, said A.M.

Credit Entry: Public Sec Banks Across The Country To Fill 1Lakh Vacancies In Next 1 And Half Years

By ugesh sarkar, Section Jobs Wanted/Available
Posted on Tue Jul 22, 2008 at 02:12:38 AM EST

Public sector banks across the country are on a hiring spree and are likely to fill around 1,00,000 vacancies in the next one and a half years.

It is estimated that around 24 lakh people applied for 20,000 clerical posts advertised by the State Bank of India showing that there are more takers for a career in banking. This is specially so as bank wages are likely to be revised by the end of the current fiscal, for which negotiations are going on between the unions, Indian banks association and finance ministry.

The hiring is expected to go up significantly in 2008-09 due to an increase in business opportunities in retail banking, marketing and expansion in rural banking.

According to the Indian Institute of Banking and Finance (IIBF), which is conducting examinations for the banking sector, it has been receiving requests to conduct recruitments from a number of banks for next year and there will be a mega recruitment drive in the early 2009.

Interestingly, the hiring is getting broad-based, bringing in specialists along with generalists for various cadre posts.

Cabinet Nod For Spl Drive To Recruit OBCs Against Backlog For Over 28,000 Reserved Posts

By Anirudh Chturvedi, Section Jobs Wanted/Available
Posted on Fri Jun 27, 2008 at 02:01:51 AM EST

Paving the way for a special drive to recruit Other Backward Classes (OBCs) for over 28,000 reserved posts, the government today decided to clear the backlog of vacancies through an official order. The backlog will be treated as a "separate and distinct" group not subject to the limit of 50 per cent reservation in a year, Minister of State for PMO Prithviraj Chavan told reporters after a meeting of the Union Cabinet.

He said the Cabinet also approved a slew of measures to benefit Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes students. On the OBC proposal mooted by the Department of Personnel and Training and approved by the Cabinet, Chavan said instructions would be issued to pave the way for conducting Special Recruitment Drive for filling up the backlog of 28,670 reserved vacancies of OBCs.

He said a 1997 Supreme Court order had stated that the quota of reserved seats cannot exceed 50 per cent of the total seats being filled. However, Parliament through the 81st amendment to the Constitution had made an exception to this principle enabling the government to fill accumulated vacancies from previous years through special recruitment drives for SCs and STs.

India Inc To Offer 15% Salary Hikes, Realty, Infrastructure Top In Terms Of Salary Increases

By Sumit Kumar, Section Jobs Wanted/Available
Posted on Tue May 27, 2008 at 04:41:56 AM EST

Despite the slowdown and turmoil in financial markets, private sector employees have received or can look forward to an average salary increase of 15 per cent this year, roughly the same as the year before but lower in real terms because of the inflation rate, which is ruling at 8 per cent.

Still, this is better than most markets - 5.5 per cent in the US and 8 per cent in China, for instance - mainly thanks to the talent crunch and rapid growth in many sectors.

"Given the slowdown, companies are being cautious. Average increases will be 7 to15 per cent though top performers will still get 25 to 30 per cent, '' said K. Sudarshan, managing partner (India) for executive search firm EMA Partners International.

HR firm Hewitt Associates, however, estimates average salaries in India rose 15.2 across sectors for 2008-09 in line with the increases last year (15.1 per cent) and better than the year before (14.4 per cent) despite slowdown in many sectors.

``The growth in salaries is due to lack of talent in the market while companies are growing at a fast pace (30 to 35 per cent in telecom, retail). The supply is not keeping pace with the demand. There's a 10 to 15 per cent shortage of talent across various levels,'' said Nitin Sethi, consulting leader, South Asia, Hewitt Associates.

At 15.5 per cent, salaries of people in junior management (up to seven years) rose the fastest, followed by middle management (seven to 12 years) at 15.2 per cent, senior management (12 years+) at 14.5 per cent while salaries of CEOs increased 13.6 per cent.
